The United Nations has called for an end to the operation in the occupied West Bank after five more Palestinians were killed in a second day of Israeli operations in the occupied West Bank.

Since midnight on Wednesday, hundreds of Israeli troops launched an operation with helicopters, drones and armored vehicles in the areas of Tulkarm, Jenin and the Jordan Valley, one of the biggest Israeli offensives in the West Bank in months.

Although the operation started on Wednesday midnight, it did not end even on Thursday. Israeli forces said at least nine Palestinian fighters were killed in Wednesday's operation in the Jenin, Tulkarm and Al Fara refugee camps combined. And on Thursday, they reported killing five Palestinian fighters inside a mosque.

After this incident, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on Israel to stop this operation immediately. "This operation is adding more fuel to an already fiery situation," he said.

Urging Israel's military to exercise maximum restraint, he said lethal weapons should only be used when there is no other option.

Palestinian clashes with Israeli security forces in the West Bank have escalated since Israel became embroiled in fighting with Hamas fighters in Gaza 11 months ago in October last year.
