Israel's military said it rescued an Israeli hostage held by Hamas after raiding a tunnel in southern Gaza.
The Israeli army said on Tuesday that it was a very "complicated" operation. The man was rescued more than 10 months after being held hostage by Hamas gunmen.
The rescued person is a male. The name is Quaid Farhan Alkadi. Age 52 years. He belongs to the Bedouin community in southern Israel. He worked as a security guard in a settlement (kibbutz) on the Gaza border. After the rescue, Farhan was admitted to the hospital. His condition is stable.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said Farhan was rescued after raiding an underground tunnel in Gaza. However, he did not say anything in detail about this campaign.
Israeli troops were operating in the area where Farhan was found, a military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. They were tracing a complex tunnel system. There were supposed to be Hamas fighters with explosives; Israeli hostages have also been kept.
The official also said that Farhan was alone when Israeli soldiers found him. Later he was brought out of the tunnel. Previous experience in rescuing hostages has been used in this operation.
About Farhan, the Israeli media say that he did not see the face of the sun for about eight months because he was in the tunnel. Another hostage was kept with him for a couple of months. Later that hostage died.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he spoke with Farhan, who was rescued from Gaza. He praised the army for rescuing Farhan. He also said that Israel will work 'relentlessly' to bring back every hostage held by Hamas.
