My hair was once very beautiful and long. I used to love to comb my hair everyday, especially before going to school. I was the best in the class in everyone's eyes.' A Palestinian child named Sama Tabil spoke with tears in her eyes.
Eight-year-old Tabil's hair fell out after seeing the horrors of the war in Gaza, Palestine.
Tabil and his family were displaced by Israeli airstrikes in the Rafah refugee camp. "When we were sleeping, the attack took place," he said. They (Israeli forces) kept shooting and shelling. We woke up to the sound of explosions and gunfire.'
The girl was horrified to see the devastation and the rows of dead bodies around her. Fear and extreme chaos in Gaza have taken a dire form. There is no stability, no peace. There is no security.
A few days after this incident, Tabil noticed that all the hair on his head was falling out. Her mother said, 'Seeing the devastation and dead bodies all around, the girl was terrified. In Gaza, fear and extreme chaos take a dire form. There is no stability, no peace. There is no security. Incidents like panic and sudden firing are the main reasons for his hair loss. He has been deprived of many things since childhood.'
Meanwhile, the other children started laughing and joking with Tabil because of his hair loss. She says, 'The children of Gazar Khan Younis refugee camp started teasing me as a naira. They keep saying these things all the time; Which gives me a lot of trouble.'
Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza, the drug crisis has become acute in the Gaza Strip. Doctors are not able to give Tabil proper treatment to prevent hair loss. Tabeel says, 'I want my hair to grow back. Let the hair come back before my birthday. Every year on my birthday I used to do hair fashion. I like to think I'm beautiful.'
Children in Gaza are suffering from a mental health crisis, UN children's agency UNICEF has warned.
