China will not engage in nuclear arms race with America: spokesperson
Beijing has directly rejected Washington's claim that China wants to engage in a nuclear arms race with the United States. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning clarified his country's position at a weekly press briefing in Beijing. He said that Washington's alarming claims about China's nuclear weapons are completely baseless.
US daily New York Times reported in a report on Tuesday that President Joe Biden has recently revised his country's nuclear weapons guidelines secretly aimed at China. Citing a secret document approved by the US government last March, the daily reported that Joe Biden had ordered US forces to prepare for a possible coordinated nuclear conflict with Russia, China and North Korea.
Mao said the news in the report had caused "deep concern" in Beijing. "Over the past few years, we have noticed that the US government has been trying to portray China as a 'nuclear threat' in order to evade its responsibility for denuclearization," the Chinese spokesman said.Mao said that in terms of size, China's nuclear arsenal is not at all comparable to that of the United States. He also said that China always follows the policy of 'no first use' in using nuclear weapons. He said that China does not want to go into an arms race not only with the United States but also with any country in the world.
