10 dead in floods in Tripura, 34 thousand people in shelters

10 people died on Wednesday due to severe floods in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura. More than 34 thousand people have gone to shelters in 8 districts there.

Thousands of houses have already been damaged by this flood, said NDTV.

Officials were quoted by the media as saying that 10 people, including a 12-year-old girl, died in South Tripura, Gomti and Khoai districts.

Officials say 9 people, including three from the same family, have drowned in landslides and incessant rains in Tripura in the last 48 hours.

Train movement has been stopped due to the situation. All schools are closed on Wednesday and Thursday due to inclement weather. Various government agencies including the National Disaster Response Force are carrying out rescue operations.

The Indian Meteorological Office said heavy to very heavy rains may occur in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura under the influence of low pressure over northern Bangladesh.

Heavy rain is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam and Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India throughout the week.
